It’s no secret former President Donald Trump wants certain Republican candidates to win this year in Michigan. His political action committee, Save America PAC, has donated to state lawmakers, statewide candidates and congressional hopefuls.
But each donation was for $5,000 or less. His PAC’s largest donation – a whopping $150,000 – went not to a candidate but to a ballot initiative: Secure MI Vote.
The proposed law, which would require Michiganders show a photo identification card to vote, missed the deadline this year to qualify for the ballot, but it submitted signatures in July.
If the Bureau of Elections determines sufficient signatures are valid, and the Board of State Canvassers certifies that finding, Michigan law allows the Republican-controlled legislature to vote the measure into law and bypass a veto from Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
